How the Abortion Pill Works
Before diving into how you can reverse the effects of the abortion pill, let’s look briefly at how the abortion pill is designed to terminate a pregnancy.
The abortion pill is a two-step process designed to terminate early pregnancies no more than 10 weeks along. The medication mifepristone is given first and works by blocking the pregnancy hormone progesterone. By blocking progesterone, the uterine lining will thin and cause the pregnancy to detach and stop growing.
Women will be instructed to take a second medication, misoprostol, about 24-48 hours later. Misoprostol causes heavy bleeding and uterine contractions to empty the uterus.
Reversing the Abortion Pill Effects
High doses of progesterone may be able to reverse the effects of mifepristone. Progesterone will continue to be provided throughout the first trimester either orally, vaginally or through shots.
Reversing the effects of a medical abortion is only possible 24-72 hours after ingesting mifepristone. If you’ve already taken misoprostol, reversing the abortion is not possible.
Is It Safe and Effective?
It is! Progesterone has been used for years as a prenatal treatment for women who are at high risk for miscarriage.
Researchers looked into the effectiveness of progesterone and found that 64-68% of cases studied were successful in reversing the medical abortion.
Rest assured, there is no evidence to suggest birth defects are more common with abortion pill reversal. You can still have a healthy pregnancy and baby if you desire to.
