Did you know that not every woman is eligible for the abortion pill drugs? Did you know that certain situations make abortion riskier? And did you know the only way to have the clarity you need to know before seeking an abortion is to get an ultrasound?
Ultrasound is a simple scan that will give you the key details you need to know to determine if abortion is an option for your situation. The Pregnancy Care Center does not perform or refer for abortion. This information is meant to help you make an informed decision.
What Details Will I Learn During an Ultrasound?
Ultrasound uses sound waves to create an image of your internal structures, and during pregnancy, ultrasound is the only way to determine the following details:
Gestational Age of Your Pregnancy
Did you know medical abortion (also known as the “abortion pill”) is only FDA-approved if your pregnancy is under 11 weeks gestation? If you seek this type of abortion and your pregnancy is older, you’re at a greater risk for serious complications.
This is why an ultrasound is essential. It can reveal the age of your pregnancy, which you’ll need to know before an abortion to protect your health.
Location of Your Pregnancy
Typical pregnancies attach and develop in the uterus. But sometimes, this process happens outside the uterus. This is known as an ectopic pregnancy, and it’s a life-threatening condition.
An ultrasound can reveal the location of your pregnancy to rule out or confirm an ectopic pregnancy. If you’re experiencing one, you’ll need emergency medical treatment, not an abortion.
Viability of Your Pregnancy
Roughly 26% of pregnancies end in miscarriage, and an ultrasound can reveal whether you’ve had one. If you’ve had a miscarriage, you’ll need other treatment than an abortion.
