Common Early Pregnancy Symptoms
While every woman experiences different symptoms during early pregnancy, here are the most common ones:
- Missed period: A missed period is often the first and most obvious sign of pregnancy, especially if your menstrual cycle is regular.
- Nausea with/without vomiting: Many women experience nausea, commonly referred to as “morning sickness,” though it can occur at any time of day. This typically begins a few weeks after conception.
- Fatigue: Feeling unusually tired is a common early symptom due to hormonal changes, particularly increased levels of progesterone.
- Breast changes: Tender, swollen, or sensitive breasts are often one of the first physical signs of pregnancy. Nipples may also darken or become more pronounced.
- Frequent urination: Increased urination may begin as early as the first few weeks due to hormonal shifts and increased blood flow to the kidneys.
- Food aversions or cravings: Hormonal changes can heighten your sense of smell and taste, leading to aversions to certain foods or cravings for others.
- Mood swings: Emotional highs and lows, similar to those experienced during PMS, are common in early pregnancy due to hormonal fluctuations.
- Light spotting or cramping: Implantation bleeding, which occurs when the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining, may cause light spotting or mild cramping.
When to Take a Pregnancy Test
If you’re experiencing these symptoms and suspect you might be pregnant, the best time to take a pregnancy test is after a missed period. This ensures that your hCG levels, the hormone detected by pregnancy tests, are high enough for accurate results.
If your periods are irregular, wait at least three weeks after unprotected sex before testing. For the most accurate result, test first thing in the morning when your urine is most concentrated.
