If you’re pregnant and your partner is pressuring you to have an abortion, know that only you can decide how to move forward with your pregnancy. It’s illegal for anyone to coerce you into having an abortion. If you feel pressured and need someone to talk to, contact Pregnancy Care Center today to schedule a free, confidential appointment with one of our caring team members.

It is important for you to make an informed decision without feeling coerced—your mental health depends on it. According to a study by the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, almost 75% of women who had an abortion felt at least subtly pressured into making the decision.

The women who felt pressured into an abortion “reported symptoms of depression (14.4%), guilt (14%), shame, regret, self-hatred, feelings of worthlessness, feelings of being unworthy of love, drug or alcohol addiction (9%), low self-esteem, anxiety, and thoughts or attempts of suicide (6.2%).”

If your partner is pressuring you to have an abortion, there are action steps you can take to ensure that you’re making your own decision.

Be Informed

The only way to know what’s best for you and your pregnancy is to be informed about all your options, which include parenting, adoption, and abortion.

While parenting and adoption both entail carrying the pregnancy to term, these can be challenging yet rewarding options.

Parenting

Parenting might feel like an impossible option. Maybe you’re still in school or don’t feel like you have a support system to help. These concerns are understandable. We are here for you as you make your decision, but our support does not end there. We are here to walk with you throughout your pregnancy journey and beyond. We can also help connect you with community resources that can assist you with a variety of needs you may be experiencing if you choose to parent.

Adoption

Did you know you have options within adoption? You can choose the family and how much or little contact you want with them. While this can be a difficult option because it means carrying the pregnancy to term, it can also be a very rewarding experience.

Abortion

This option involves terminating your pregnancy. Before choosing this option, it’s essential to consider the immediate short-term and long-term mental health risks

If your partner presses you to have an abortion, they may not fully understand all the options themselves. Researching these options and knowing what you want to do will help you explain your choice to your partner.

Seek Help

Is your partner making you feel unsafe? Are they threatening you to have an abortion against your will? If so, these are signs of an abusive relationship.

If you feel immediate danger, contact the National Domestic Abuse Hotline. A representative can assist you with resources that will help you find safety.
