Abortion in Tennessee

Tennessee law places heavy restrictions on abortion.

Currently, abortion is only permitted if the woman’s life or health is at serious risk (Tennessee HB1029). For women considering abortion for other reasons, this would require traveling out of state.

It’s also important to note that the abortion pill is only FDA-approved for use through 10 weeks of pregnancy, which is in the first trimester. Taking abortion pills later in pregnancy or without medical supervision can be very dangerous.

Parenting as an Option

Parenting is the natural outcome if you carry your pregnancy to term without creating alternative plans.

While it may feel impossible given your finances or life situation, there are many programs in Tennessee that can help. You may qualify for TennCare (Tennessee’s Medicaid program), which covers prenatal and delivery costs. WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) can also help with food and nutrition for both you and your baby.

Beyond state programs, Pregnancy Care Center offers emotional and material support, such as diapers, clothing, formula, and parenting classes to help prepare you to parent. Your partner is also welcome to join you for any of our services or classes.

Adoption as an Option

If you do not feel ready to parent, adoption is another path.

Adoption agencies in Tennessee allow you to choose the adoptive family and the type of adoption plan—open, semi-open, or closed. Your plan will determine how much contact you will have with the child and adoptive family moving forward.

The adoptive family is legally allowed to offer birth parents reasonable expenses over a specific amount of time. Adoptive families will also cover expenses not paid by insurance and legal fees.

Adoption can provide your child with a safe, stable home while giving you the peace of mind that they will have a bright future with loving adoptive parents.
